As a web designer, the two biggest questions all new prospective clients have are… “do you have the ability to create a website that will increase leads and drive growth for my business?” and “how much will a website cost?”

I have been asked these questions hundreds, if not thousands, of times. It is natural to wonder if the project will be successful. I completely understand the questions. It is the same questions I ask when looking to hire someone to complete some type of project for me.

Let’s be transparent, price matters (it is not the only thing that matters, but it is pretty close to the top of the list). We get it! But it can be difficult to answer as there may not be a straightforward answer. The price of your website can depend on a variety of factors, including the type of website, the quality of work, the delivery of the product, and what is included in the scope of work.

At Therapy Marketing Solutions, we strive to educate every prospective client, even if that leads to them working with another web developer. But here’s what makes pricing hard, not all websites are apple-to-apple comparisons. Website company packages can look very different, depending on the factors mentioned above. I’ll do my best to illustrate some of the variables that could make a difference in the final ticket price of your website.

Please keep in mind that all prices are estimates and ranges to help you better understand the website design and development industry and create a budget accordingly.

How Much Does a Website Cost?

Most websites will cost between $3000- 20,000 to build in 2023 – this price includes the build and launch of the website.

As with any website project, the price range can change depending on several factors, including the website’s functionality (what you want it to do), the website’s development, the website, the size of the website, and what is included in the website project.

Basic Website Design

Some therapy clients just want a very basic website.

Building a website will involve additional costs, including the creation of all content, the purchase of images, and the website hosting and domain (some website builders include hosting and the domain, see my blog on choosing the right website builder for more information).

A basic website includes:
  • Development of the website
  • 10 website pages developed (this seems to be a standard number)
  • A few rounds of revisions
  • Launch of the website

Most basic website design projects DO NOT include the creation of content, SEO, speed enhancements, and image procurement. Some projects include the design of the site, but not all do, so it is best to ensure that you understand exactly what is included in the project.

These projects typically are around $3000-5000.

Basic Website Plus Copywriting

If you have read any of my other blog posts or listened to my podcast, you will understand the effect that good website copy can have on increasing leads and driving growth. Having a website that works and looks good is important, but having website copy that speaks to your ideal client is crucial for driving growth (okay, I am stepping off my soapbox).

Most freelancers will not offer copywriting services and a website. This is something you would typically get from a marketing agency.

This project would include:
  • Some kind of strategy session(s) to help them create content
  • Creation of the content
  • Development of the website
  • 10 website pages developed (this seems to be a common number)
  • A few rounds of revisions
  • Launch of the website

A project like this would typically be somewhere in the $7000-12,000 price range. The price can depend on the deliverables, the process, the experience of the copywriter, and even the size of the marketing agency. This project should reap great results, and that should be highlighted in the strategy.

Basic Website Plus Design

Not all developers design and not all designers develop websites. So it is essential to understand what you are getting from your website project. Before building your website, many developers, who don’t design, will have you work with a designer to create mock-ups or wireframes of your website. This is an additional step and fee, but for those who package both in your project, it would include:

  • Design of the website
  • Website layout
  • User-interface design (human-first approach to design)
  • Development of the website
  • 10 website pages developed (this seems to be a common number)
  • A few rounds of revisions
  • Launch of the website

The price tag on this kind of project is usually somewhere in the $10,000 to 13,000 range. However, it can easily go much higher depending on the deliverables. This can include other options like custom website icons or images, custom typography or fonts, and more.

Basic Website Plus SEO

Search Engine Optimization, also known as SEO, drives traffic to your website from browsers like Google, Bing, etc. Understanding the need for traffic makes it clear why incorporating SEO in your website’s build is crucial to your business’s growth.

A project like this would include:
  • Strategy session(s) to understand your business
  • Keyword Research
  • SEO-minded Content Writing
  • On-page SEO
  • Off-page SEO
  • Writing blog articles
  • Additional landing pages
  • Creating backlinks
  • Development of the website
  • 10 website pages developed (this seems to be a common number)
  • A few rounds of revisions
  • Launch of the website

The pricing can be structured in a variety of ways for a project like this because it usually involves a minimum six-month retainer to start seeing consistent results. Still, you can expect to invest somewhere between $10,000- $15,000. But, of course, if writing additional landing pages or blogs is included, the price could be more.

A Comprehensive Package

I’m sure by now, you are starting to understand why there is a such a large variance in price and why the upper pricing threshold easily reaches $20,000 and could be even more, especially if you hire different individuals or companies to complete each portion of the project. Working with one marketing agency might be the best option as packaging all of these elements together could include a discount.

This project would include:
  • Strategy session(s) to understand your business
  • Keyword Research
  • SEO-minded Content Writing
  • On-page SEO
  • Off-page SEO
  • Writing blog articles
  • Additional landing pages
  • Creating backlinks
  • Design of the website
  • Website layout
  • User-interface design (human-first approach to design)
  • Development of the website
  • 10 website pages developed (this seems to be a common number)
  • A few rounds of revisions
  • Launch of the website

The Wrap-Up

Side Note

You may be able to find a web developer who can do your site for less. If they are new or from another country, they may be able to provide you with a website for a lower price, but beware of what you will get and be very clear on the scope of work to be completed. Upwork or Fiverr are fairly safe options for finding web developers who can provide this service at the price you need. These job hiring platforms are not just for inexpensive projects, though. Both have web developers that are highly experienced and, therefore, will charge more for a project (You can even find me there).
